Below are a prose compilation of the latest survey statements sent to me. The similarity of the statements is due to the standardized information within the survey form. Look, though, for the added prose that each individual wrote about their particular experiences. I hope that you'll be able to identify with others who share our habit. You can see that you are, after all, very human and not as "weird" as you may have believed.

Elizabeth, age 24, from New York, has sucked her left thumb her whole life. "Probably prenatally". Her teeth never needed braces but she has a permanent callus. She indulges when going to sleep, while working or studying, watching TV, while reading and driving, and in front of family members. Her parents were understanding. To her, it's just a habit she can't quit. It feels good and derives a sense of security. She doesn't place a finger over her nose but,

"I have a stinky old pillow case that almost feels like leather. I love the way it feels and the way it smells. I would never wash it or allow anyone else to do so."

She wasn't breastfed and didn't use a pacifier. She is a smoker and has known other adult thumb suckers.

"I am not shy about the fact that I suck my thumb. Everyone that knows me knows that I am a thumbsucker. If I keep it secret, I'll miss out enjoying it as often as I do. Being a thumbsucker could define who I am. I am not embarassed of it. I am more embarassed about my dirty blanket than I am about the actual fact of sucking my thumb.

She is college educated, just the correct weight, white and was born #2 or 3.

Elizabeth, known as "Wildflower", age 39, from the "wild west", has sucked her right middle and index fingers since after the age of 3. Her fingers don't show any signs, but her teeth are mildly bucked. She indulges as she goes to sleep and during sex or masturbation. Her parents teased her and used bitter solutions. For her it's just a habit she can't quit, it's erotic and feels good. She wasn't breastfed and is a former smoker. She hasn't known other adult thumb suckers.

"I can't stop my fingers and sometimes, when I am touching myself, especially when I am on my stomach, rhythmically grabbing myself with my left hand, and also when my lover is under the covers and can't see me enjoying myself. I'm very oral and [engage in oral sex]. I worry about my teeth. The teeth on your page has me besides myself. I wear a retainer-like thingy I had made to keep myself from sucking at night. Sometimes, hell, lots of times, I don't want to use it. I need my fingers. Do you have any pictures of finger suckers? Would you include them though it doesn't exactly qualify?

I slept with one guy for months without him knowing my little secret. People without the habit couldn't understand. After reading and seeing this site I'm kinda beginning to understand kinky, weird urges. I am unable to explain just how mine came about. I just know I find it hard to stop. So, maybe it is the same for others...of course it is. Anyway, thanks. Who's the 'cover girl', you tell us, please?"

Elizabeth is college educated, white, overweight and is the third born of three.

A few weeks after school started there was a sleep-over and I was invited. I was nervous about them seeing me suck my thumb, so Idecided to just tell them about it instead of going through the embarrassment of being caught. When I told them it was no big deal and we had a lot of fun."

"I have had three separate 'bankeys', as I called them as a child. The one I currently have is a remnant from some Beatrix Potter cloth. It's flannel, and I take it everywhere with me. It is small enough to fit into my backpack. When I suck my thumb, I always have to havve it near my nose so I can smell it. The smells it has are from wherever I take it, so it's comforting.

Well, I do take bankey to high school with me, and sometimes it scars my friend, Jade. When I put in near her, she screams and tells me to stop. It's actually pretty funny. Most of my friends know that I suck my thumb, and although I did try to quit, it was pure hell.

But my favorite story was how one time, I was about 9 years old and at a sleep over with my friends, it was late and I thought the other girls were sleeping, so I started to bring out bankey and suck my thumb. As soon as I did theis, three girls woke up and asked me what I was doing. I pretended to be sleep-sucking, and murmered a few things. They went back to sleep, and I spent the whole night giggling about my little trickery.

I want to meet other thumb sucking adults with blankets."

"When my now Mother-in-Law asked me in front of several people what I was doing in my car when she saw me the other day. I had both hands up around my face and no hands on the wheel. I told her I was driving with my knees. She has known me my whole life and does know I suck my thumb. She thought it was humorous to mention this.

I say the same thing to anybody that gives me grief, would you prefer I picked my nose or smoked? It's personal and I have no idea why others care that I do it. It has NO effect on them.

I'm so glad to have found this site. I do have a couple of friends that also suck their thumbs, so I knew it was more common than you think. I also thought for sure someone would have 'outed' us a long time ago on some TV show."

"Ah shucks, I have been caught soooo many times, but my friends caught me sucking my fingers when I fell asleep. They said that I was making a strange sucking noise and they could not figure out where it was coming from. Needless to say, I was very embarrassed, but, oh well, life goes on....

Well, I am glad I found this site. I was beginning to think that I needed some kind of psychological counseling or something. I have tried to quit on a number of occasions and woke up with my fingers in my mouth, so I just deal with it. I don't know if there is something from my childhood that makes me do it or what. It baffles me at times. Sometimes I can't sleep unless I'm sucking my fingers. I have to think of it like this: my problems could be worse.

What I like most about the site is the comments from other adults who, like me, still suck their fingers and have not a clue as to why. some have been free enough to allow others to see their weakness (for lack of a better word) but I have not been able to do that because for so long I have heard that if an adult still sucks their thumb or fingers something is seriously wrong with him or her. So I have just kept it to myself.

I had braces when I was 13 and my teeth were so perfect. Now they are not so perfect but they aren't bucked yet. So I am going to get them for a second time. I am paying for them this time!! But keep up the good work on your site. I look forward to seeing the results of your surveys. They sure put me a little more at ease. Thank you very much."

I like the smell of the flannel pillowcase."

"I should mention that I recently started sucking my thumb and am enjoying exploring a different level of relaxation. I started after learning my girlfriend is a thumb sucker.

I just wanted to see what was so relaxing about it. Now, a few months later, I am an avid thumb sucker. she used to be shy about doing it in front of me or having me see her do it. Now she lets me hold her while she sucks her thumb before we get up in the a.m. It's soothing for me to watch her and it makes me feel closer to her. She thinks I'm nuts, ut, oh well.

Awesome site. I never thought I would become a lesbian. I never thought I would suck my thumb...who knew?"

"When I went to get my braces, my parents told the Orthodontist about my thumb sucking, so he wrote it in the chart. Well, he started asking me all these questions about it. When he left this HOT guy from school who personally knew me, my crush, came back. Then the Orthodontist came back and said, without looking over the chart, 'here read this pamphlet about devices we can install to make you stop sucking your thumb. And, if that wasn't bad enough, the Orthodontist came back in and said 'here is the thumb sucking appliance you wanted' while he was there.

"I can't remember ever being confronted the few times I've been caught. The people always act as if they didn't see anything. Sometimes I think they mentally convince themselves that they did not see what they think they saw and then act as if nothing happened.

I can't remember if I ever used a pacifier.

I do remember my mother taking a cottage cheese container and punching holes in the edge and sewing the cuff of a mitten to it. This was then tied to my wrist for the night. I remember that I hated this and I don't think the contraption ever stayed on for the whole night. I would get out of it somehow.

My sister was also a thumbsucker until at least her late teens if she ever actually quit. We don't discuss it."

She places a finger over her nose and uses a fuzzy blanket. She wasn't breast fed and didn't use a pacifier. She is a smoker.

"I have always had a fuzzy blanket. I love to pick and roll them into a boll to rub on my lip or nose.

My family all know I suck my thumb. Once in 5th grade I told my best friend and she thought I was teasing. When I insisted, she still didn't believe me, so I didn't ever do it around her. I had three relationships with men who I shared my secret with. The first thought it was cute and had NO problems with it. The second didn't seem to care either way. My husband now thinks it's silly, but never says much. My four year old son, who was breast-fed for a year LOVES his thumb and blanket. When people tell him he is too big to do that he has told a few, 'my mommy does'.

I have gotten to the point in my life where I think there could be A LOT worse things to do. I am SO tired of it being a big issue, though I don't really want everyone to know. Also, I did have braces, but it was from my mouth being small and crowded. I feel it had VERY little to do with my thumbsucking. I place my whole thumb in my mouth and the pressure is on the roof of my mouth."

Jessica, age 21, from Wisconsin, has sucked her left thumb all her life. She needed braces, but, due to the continuation of her habit, continues to have mildly bucked teeth. It hasn't effected her thumb. She indulges as she goes to sleep, while watching TV, while reading, during sex or masturbation and only while alone. Her parents were understanding. To her, thumb sucking represents a feeling of security, it's a habit she can't quit, it feels good. She places a finger over her nose and is a former smoker.

"My problem is that I'm 21 years old and still suck my thumb. I had braces for 8 years and had them off in September of '97. I did not tell my Orthodontist that I suck my thumb. Now, over a year later, my upper teeth look like crap. My overbite is back and so is the gap. I am probably going to get a new top set of braces on again, but first I have to stop the thumb sucking. It is so hard because it is there and, like, if someone wanted to stop smoking they could not buy the cigarettes, bit I can't get rid of my thumb. I've tried everything, from a glove on my hand to the spicy gels. I am thinking of hypnotism as that has been known to work. My upper teeth are very, very sensitive lately; I always feel a cool tingle through them. I can't stand cold air and I think I have gum problems from it. Is this possible?"

It is nice when they know because I can suck while we watch movies together and certain friends enjoy it when I play with their hair.
